Looking into today’s options for treating ADHD? ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is a syndrome that directly affects the neurodevelopment of a person and occurs more often in men than in women. The number of those diagnosed with ADHD began to grow considerably in the 1990s, which started the development of a variety of medications to treat this growing mental disorder. While the search for causes is still ongoing, it is believed that this disorder is related to genetics.
About ADHD
According to the American Psychiatric Association, ADHD is one of the most common mental disorders affecting children, but it can also affect adults. The main symptoms associated with this disorder include not being able to keep still, not being able to focus and not having the ability to exercise self-control properly. It is vital for those who believe they have ADHD to learn more about the disorder. This includes learning everything they can about the different types of ADHD and when to visit a professional.
Types of ADHD
There are three different types of ADHD:
- Inattentive
- Hyperactive-Impulse
- Combination of both types
Inattentive ADHD
When someone is diagnosed with this type of ADHD, it means that they often experience the following symptoms:
- Problems focusing
- Not paying attention to details
- Easily distracted
- Does not like performing certain tasks
As the name suggests, these symptoms make it difficult to pay attention to a task.
Hyperactive or Impulse ADHD
When someone is diagnosed with this type of ADHD, it means that they often experience the following symptoms:
- Fidgets when sitting
- Constant talking
- Does not show signs of self-control
Treatment for ADHD
Today’s treatment options for ADHD often require those diagnosed to participate in behavioral therapies as well as take certain medications. Behavioral therapies can teach proper behavior and often include focusing on what you are doing right and recognizing it and pointing out when you are doing something inappropriate for the time and place.
There are currently two types of medications that ADHD patients can take and fall into the category of stimulants and non-stimulants. It is up to a medical professional to determine which of these medications will work ideally for each ADHD patient.
